This is an activity I am doing next year when we learn about phases of the moon in 1st grade. This was an idea from pinterest.com. It is made, of course, with oreos!

Plant Experiment
During our plant unit we did an experiment to see what plants need to live. We got eight flowers and then labeled them: No water(Do not water at all), water
No Light(place in a dark space), Light
No Space, Space
No Air(Place in a plastic bag), Air
Make sure to water all of the plants except for the one that says No Water.
At the end of the experiment we realized that plants need Water, Air, Space, and Water to grow properly. Water was the most important thing because the one that did not get water died first.
No David!
We read No David! by David Shannon and then made these David portraits. The children helped come up with positive things to say to David.

This is a great chart one of my fellow teachers found online to help the children remember how to RETELL when reading a story.
Character Traits
Each week we learn a new character trait and we read a book in which the character has that trait. Then I put the words up along with a picture of the book and the synonyms for that word. The children love the chart and often refer to it when we are reading other books. It teaches them lots of new vocabulary.
Plant Parts and Needs Diagram
We have been learning all about plants. We then made a diagram of plant parts (petal, leaf, stem, roots) and also added what plants need to grow (sun, water, soil) to our diagram. We then talked about how insects help plants to grow and they got to add a 3-D insect sticker to their flower. The bees went in the center because they drink nectar and the ladybug went on the leaf bacause they eat the aphids off the leaves. The center of the plant is a cupcake paper, the roots are made from yarn, and the insect stickers are from Dollar Tree. They turned out really pretty and colorful!!!
St Patrick's Day-- Shamrocks
We learned about St. Patrick's Day symbols. We then made these shamrocks to wear on our shirts.
St. Patrick's Day--Leprechaun Trap
We set a trap for the Leprechaun but he came to our room and left a big mess. He left green footprints everywhere and spread shamrocks all over the room. We found his hat but he was gone. He then sent us a letter from Ireland and ask if we could send his hat back and his green coins. When we sent them back he left us a nice reward-- A Pot of Gold!!!
Dr. Seuss Week-- Yertle the Turtle
We read Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss and the children made their own turtles using a plastic bowl that was painted green. They then cut out the head, legs, and tail from green paper and attached with tape.
Dr. Seuss Week- The Lorax
We read the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The children then wrote about what they would do to help the environment if they were the Lorax. Then I took their picture with a Lorax mustache on. They were cute!!!
Dr. Seuss Week-- The Foot Book
We used The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss to learn about antonyms. The children came up with a list of opposites and then wrote them on their feet that they traced.
Dr. Seuss Week-- I Can Read With my Eyes Shut
After we read the book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut by Dr. Seuss, the children helped create a chart of places they could read with their Eyes Wide open. We talked about why reading is important and that you must have your eyes wide open so that you do not miss anything important.
Dr. Seuss- Tongue Twisters
We read the book Oh Say Can You Say and then the children came up with their own tongue twisters using their names. Then they wrote it on a tongue cut out and glued it to their face.
Dr. Seuss Week-- There's a Wocket in my Pocket
We also read There's a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Seuss. Then the children created their own pocket and a creature to go in their pocket. They came up with a name for their creature that rhymed with pocket.
We read Horton Hears a Who for Dr. Seuss Week. I then made a pattern for them to cut out to make their elephant. We then glued a pipe cleaner and pom pom for the flower. Then I glued a small pom pom for the speck on the flower. I created a speech bubble on Microsoft and the children wrote in the bubble what they would say to Horton if they were a Who on the speck.
Dr. Seuss Week- Snack
We created this fun Dr. Seuss snack using oreos, icing, and lifesavers. We made it to look like Cat in the Hat's hat. Fun and Easy!!!
Black History Month-- Rosa Parks
We learned about Rosa Parks and the children created a bus and then wrote about Rosa Parks. They wrote " Thank You Rosa Parks" because she was brave and started the movement to make it so that we can sit wherever we want on the bus today.
Black History Month-- Ruby Bridges
We learned all about Ruby Bridges during Black History Month. The children created a portrait of Ruby Bridges and then wrote about what they learned and why she was important.
Valentine's Day-- My Loving Handprint
These cards turned out really pretty. I just painted their hands and then placed them on the card so that it created a heart in the middle. They then decorated the card and wrote "I Love You" in the heart. They gave the card to their parents for Valentine's Day.
